Poland’s Pilot Training
Published December 2020
The feature describes the integration of the new M346 within the Polish Air Force training program.
The Polish Armed Forces have been going through rapid changes since joining NATO in 1999. Nowadays the Siły Powietrzne or Polish Air Force operates a rather fast decreasing mix of older Soviet era aircraft and helicopters, combined with an expanding fleet of modern indigenous and western hardware. The effect of this transition has been significant for the jet pilot training program, and required a different approach in the pilot training programme. The acquisition of eight Alenia Aermacchi M-346 Master, destined to replace the venerable PZL TS-11 Iskra, is that step forward in the right direction. The M-346 provides progress on many terrains, significantly improving the preparation of jet pilot cadets for the modern equipment of the Polish Air Force. In this article, we focus on the current situation with TS-11 operations winding down and the M-346 being introduced to the pilot training programme in 2020.
